The premise of my art is to understand why trauma and violence experienced in one generation affects subsequent generations. Why pathways that lead to the replication of patterns of violence as well, those that interrupt these patterns? My interest in intergenerational transmission of trauma and violence developed out of my focus of my own family history. As I create, I’m actively exploring and understanding my behavior within the context of my family and making sense of my past and recreating my narrative of past experiences in hope to interrupt patterns and cycles. I create quilts because they visually represent the history and patterns that are passed down from generation to generation. I intentionally interrupt the quilt patterns with house hold objects or misaligning the patterns to manifest my hope to break apart from family patterns of trauma.
